Hi Elizabeth, We always advise homeowners to follow the advice in our homeowner checklist to assess whether a tradesperson is suitable for their work: ratedpeople(dot)com/c/homeowner-checklist. Many tradespeople do ask for deposits but this should always be documented with a detailed invoice. As a rough idea, it should be less than 20% of the overall price of the job but enough to cover the tradesperson’s tools, materials and travel costs. I hope this helps.
