Hi Jeremy it never ceases to amaze me that normally sensible people are talked into handing over large sums of money to tradesmen they barely know without a blow being struck or any materials delivered! I personally never ask for money upfront and if it's a large job I ask for stage payments as each section of the work is completed. The alarm bells would be ringing if his wife is saying not to call the home number and it's up to him to contact you a very strange way to be running a business! I would be asking for my deposit back as he sounds untrustworthy, whether you get it is a different story! Learn a lesson from this, it sounds like it will be an expensive one unfortunately. Ed
