Hi Gerald I would say with the age of your property that your roof is most likely formed using roof trusses these must never be cut as the structural integrity would be removed. You can however increase the lenght of the opening running parallel to the trusses to fit a larger hatch, I would recommend using a Fakro brand hatch with built in ladder these can be fitted in between trusses spaced at the standard 600mm centres, these are by far the best type I have fitted.
