Replacing Worn Stair Nosings

Posted by kath cavanagh, on
Hi - we're looking to repair some worn stair tread nosing in a 200 year old cottage - no understairs access. This will involve removing the worn area of tread and splicing a new 40mm nose shaped piece secured to the existing riser, with wedges, gorilla glue and screws. Is this an acceptable process. We've tried it on one stair and it seems very solid. Be great if you could advise. Many thanks. Kath

The method you have described will be adequate, i would possibly make the nosing wider than 40mm to enable a solid timber to be slid in and glued and screwed to the existing riser and tread. the the new nosing can simply be placed on top and secured.
