Shelving system on a metal stud wall

Posted by VENUS RABBANI, on
I am putting up shelves on a 4.19mx2.5m metal stud wall by using heavy duty uprights and brackets and mdf as the shelves. I am also using cavity wall fixing. I'm quiet concern that since this is a big wall and my library is pretty heavy and full, mounting it to the wall is not a good idea and that the wall isn't strong enough to bear the load. Can you please say whether I need extra support or is it a good idea to put this up in the first place? Thanks a lot Veera

Veera hi. If your putting shelving up on a stud wall to take a heavy load like books, i would suggest you change the design of the shelving. If you were to use timbers planks the same depth as the shelves and stand them along the wall at equal gaps with shelves between the planks the weight would be transferred to the floor. But still fix the top to the wall so it doesn't fall forward.

What would you like to do now?
