Laminate kitchen work tops

Hi, I am looking to buy new kitchen work tops to replace my existing ones and will look to hire a carpenter to fit these. I am wondering what is best to buy 1. Made to measure work tops but with an extra inch or 2 added too allow room for the cutting and fitting of the corners (2 L shaped counter tops) or 2. would I be ok to buy a number of 3m lenths and ask the carpenter to cut these to size to fit the work tops (this way would require the carpenter to make 2 work tops out of 3m lengths) ?
