if I am having the outside of my house painted, does the painter by law have to use scaffolding?

Hello Ian, by law any building more than 10m height needs scaffolding but he can use a ladder if under 10m height as far as the ladder is safe at the base and it does not wobble at any time. Before the work start please check the tradesmen have all the insurance with him to cover any loss at your premises. Other way to find out is going to local council and find out more. Hi Ian. No is the answer. On many occasions I have used just ladders, so it is entirely up to the decorator as to whether he feels it prudent or safer to use scaffolding or not, but it is certainly not enforced by law. I hope this helps. Rich Mckeown
