Hi Lisa, There is a new product availible from Johnsons/Leyland (but might be avalible at other distributors) called Zinsser which is designed to go straight onto gloss/varnish etc. without any sanding . I know it sounds too good to be true but it does what it says, and 2 coats of the Zinsser and a topcoat or 2 of finishing product will do the trick. Be sure when you buy it that it is the correct 1 as Zinsser have various products so ask for the 1 that does the job you require. I have used it numerous times and is amazing.
