Preparation to paint stained bannisters

The bannisters in my house are stained mahogany with a varnish over the top. I want to paint them white, what preparation do I need to do. Will rubbing down be enough?

Hi Kim, a good old rub down not a heavy grade sandpaper, probably best #120, undercoat with 2 top coverings which ever your choice of finish I would choose between satinwood or gloss oil base finish. have a good day. Bob Glen Painter/Decorator.
