Posted by Molly Kinsella, on
I painted the walls of a small room, about 2-3 months ago, with emulsion and have been left with a chemical smell
I have washed the walls with bleach twice
biological powder solution
Milton but all to no avail
It seems to be worse if it is damp
Plwease please tell me how to deal with this smell
Hi Molly, How old was the paint tin? I think you have used an old paint to paint the walls, try one think of removing the smell by cutting three red onions in half and placing it in different places of the room, and see if this shall solve the problem if not please let me know.
The smell of new paint should go after a couple of days. And certantly should not smell that bad. I would contact the paint company to complain, also a refund as it's not exceptable to have paint to smell after all this time.
It s almost certain that It is the paint you have used.
I would recommend repainting with a normal good quality vinyl Matt emulsion which
will seal the walls completely. Also air the room whilst re-painting. It may smell of
fresh paint for a few hours but that should be it.
If you use Eco paints your likely to get another completely different odour problem occur.
I personally would recommend something like Dulux Matt Vinyl emulsion paint and give it two
coats allowing the first to dry completely. This should cure the problem if it is paint related
I can only imagine you have used an oil based paint?.
Or you must be sensetive to paint smells. The voc given off whilst drying are minimal since 2010
Try air freshner or repaint with low odour eco paints
