Wallpapering problem

Posted by Michelle Wells, on
When I papered a wall that had previously been emulsioned, the paper came off when the paste dried. The wall has a very cold feel to it and has previously been papered. Is there anything I can do to make paper stick to it? Thanks

Hi Michelle, It could be 1) the paste isn't mixed to the right consistency for the weight of the paper. Check the instruction on the paste packet. I recommend ready mixed paste for heavy embossed or heavy vinyl papers. 2) there's some oily residue on the surface of the wall which is preventing the paste from bonding. Clean the walls thoroughly with soapy water and rinse well. You can check this by pasting part of the wall and if the past separates and runs the wall needs cleaning. 3) the emulsion that's on the wall is of a cheaper type such as those found in DIY stores. They can be very weak due to the lack of vinyl content. Use a "vinyl" Matt to prime the walls with. Hope this helps
