Wood Panelling

I’m in the process of renovating my house, I have tongue and groove wood panelling on 1/2 the wall in the kitchen. It has been stained dark by the previous owner, I would like it to be painted. I have so far sanded it, but am now wandering what is the next step, can I paint a base coat of emulsion and then finish with my choosen colour or do I need a primer? Many thanks
