Hi Trish, Firstly you need to seal the edges of the mdf with watered down pva glue. once dried apply an acrillic primer with a mini gloss roller, allow to dry and rub down with fine sand paper at least 180grit. Do this twice then apply your finishing coat, preferably not matt as it does not clean well. Good luck Ross
