Hi Pat the method previously suggested is basically to tap the ceiling lightly with a hammer, if there is no joist you will hear a hollow sound and when you hit a joist you will hear a more solid sound. On older properties joists are generally spaced at 450mm centres. It may not work so well on lath and plaster ceilings and check the condition of the plaster before using a hammer on it, you don't want the ceiling on your head! Alternatively you can get electronic devices to pinpoint the location of the joist ( Tool Hire might have them). Once you have located the joist just be careful how long a fixing you put in you don't want to hit a pipe or cable! Thanks. Ed.
Knocking by hammer you will hear sounds more long and short the short it nan your joist. jodttAnd next will be 400mm of other joist about.
