I would advise removing existing ceiling and installing a Resilient Bar Solution with acoustic mineral wool friction fitted in the joists above and 2 layers of 15mm acoustic plasterboards . Don't forget all the joints and seams need to be sealed with acoustic sealant on the first layer , then plaster & decorate.
Try plasterboarding ceiling with 12mm soundbloc boards then skim Dave DS Plasterers
