If it's a stud wall but the bracket needs more than a stud to fix to then cut out an area of board and the fit ply (slightly bigger ) behind and refit board ( ply noggin) this will give added strength and piece of mind :)
Try 'grip it' fittings. They come in various weight grades, choose the right ones, or just go for the most load bearing ones for peace of mind...
If it's a stud wall, find the stud work behind the plaster first and fix it to that. If it's dry lined just use slightly longer fixings so they go into the wall behind. You can get fixing for plasterboard but I personally wouldn't trust them for something like a tv.
