Marfel Marble is commonly used as a hearth surround supplied by both BandQ and Wickes to name just two so it shouldn't melt with the heat! What the supplier may have meant is that marfel marble in tile form are sometimes used in a tile hearth and would need fireproof adhesive to be stuck down with. Hope this helps you out.
