Fitting a water butt

Posted by Jo Williams, on
I need to attach a water butt to drain pipe. Is this an easy job?

Yes - you can buy a special water butt kit. It requires cutting the drain pipe and inserting the attachment for the water butt diversion, allowing then water to continue using the pipe down when the water butt is full. It takes even someone not used to DIY between 30 and 60 minutes. Someone used to this would complete this in about 10 minutes. The only problem might be with a tight drain pipe fixed to the wall feeding into a ground drain - it may require the feed from the guttering at the roof to be removed to allow insertion of the water butt fitting by lifting the upper part of the drain pipe. Some of the pipe securing clips may also need removing to facilitate that.

Hi Jo. This is a fairly easy job for a competent diy enthusiast. You can buy water butts with complete kits and instructions from any major diy store. Make sure you purchase the base as well or raise the butt off the floor otherwise you'll have problems trying to fit a watering can under the tap. Hope this helps. Regards Dwayne Busby's Landscapes

Hi Jo This is reasonable easy depending on your practical ability. You would need to cut the drain pipe, adding a junction to feed water to the but. Should take a maximum of an hour or you could call in a handyman regards John info@ themanhandyman dot co dot uk

I can't add anything to the wise advice already given. Just make sure you have all the fixtures that it says you should have in the butt fitting kit. One small problem with water butts is that in this current wet weather they fill up very quickly and overflow . I've been leaving mine withe the tap open attached to a hosepipe draining to a flower bed. Nearer the time that I need to use the water I'll keep the tap shut.

It's as easy as your ability ! It's only two drill holes and screws but putting in the screws can be difficult due to the limited space within the water butt . Do not attach the down pipe to it . It needs to move and the down pipe may need removing at a later date .
