1/ Is it actually Mahogany which if sanded down will have a reddish colour 2/ If it is MahoganySometimes you will find it has been stained to give that look 3/ So to your question.Try a small patch when sanded down with oil or even a wet rag that could give you an idea of a colour 4/ Mahogany ,like oak and other timbers can only be lighten if stained, but be carefull and test regards Jeff

Hello Carmen, Mahogany is naturally a dark wood . There are 2-part systems that you can buy off the shelf that will in effect bleach the timber and in doing so lighten the overall colour, which you would then sand down and finish in your desired colour. It would be recommended to test on a small area first. Good luck :)
