Sealing bath

Posted by Keith Newton, on
Sealant around bath leaking. Ceiling in room below bathroom showing shins of a leak. What do I do?.

Brett Davies

Remove all of the old sealant, every little bit, doing this can be time consuming and monotonous, they do sell silicone remover which makes the job a little easier (£5 -£10 from most DIY suppliers, you will also require methylated spirit, ghe instructions will explain how to use), making the new seal look good may be difficult for a beginner (takes a lot of practice) the main concern is that the silicone sticks to the bath and tiles, before applying the new seal, fill the bath with cold water ( this positions the bath at its lowest, making the silicone seal last longer) make sure the area to be sealed is completely clean and dry, then apply the new seal, leave to set for at leasr 24 hours. Good luck Brett

Seek the help of a professional. Silicone sealing is the kind of job most people think is really easy only to find half way through that its not as easy as they first thought and they've got silicone everywhere. Also it is a job that is either done properly or it's not. Every last bit of old silicone needs to be removed before the new silicone goes on. Takes time, persistence, patience and the right tools.

Hi keith I would suggest to seek an advice of experienced trade person as removal of sealant needs to be done in proper maner as a bad applied silikone will cause a leak and will cost more to repair a ceiling Regards Rafal.
