seem like thers no fixings to the stairs to the wall, if the wall is solid it can be screwed to the blockwork or brickwork, have you acess to uderside of stairs?

I live in a relatively new property (built 1995) and have noticed a crack between the skirting board on the stairs and the wall. The crack expands to a couple of mm when the stairs are trodden on. Is this normal or does it need to be looked at urgently?

Hi it's quite a common problem in modern properties alot of it's down to shrinkage, if you think the movement is excessive you could put some extra fixings through the stair string ( The skirting bit!) into the wall. Use a frame fixer as they have a very long plug and good holding capacity, Fischer fixings are the best ones to use. Ed
