Confusion with SDS drill bits

I am looking to buy an SDS drill for use both in brick and generally around the house (also wood and metal). It seems however that you can only buy masonry bits for SDS drills. Are there general purpose twist bits for SDS fittings or do I have buy a chuck adapter? Thanks.
