Artex issues

Posted by Julian Sparkes, on
How likely is it that Artex will fall off a ceiling after it has been plastered over? One plasterer we have had to quote said he would prefer to board over the Artex to rule out this possibility. Is this really necessary? Thank you.

Hi Before you plaster a ceiling you have to scrape the Artex of its pointy bits. If large chunks won't come of during this barbaric treatment I think you will be safe to plaster over. Apply 3 coats of PVA and leave to dry.

its the best way, to overboard then skim, artex may come off in chunks because of the moisture in the plaster

If its bonded correctly then it should be fine, however by boarding over it then skimming, it will produce a better finish, also the cost of extra plaster/work by plastering directly over the artex may actually work out more expensive as well depending on the depth of the actual artex
