Restoring an external brick wall

Posted by Richard , on
Hello. The previous owners of my house painted the brick wall of the front garden (border with the pavement) in a very shoddy manner; they don't seem to have used masonry paint, and the paint is now peeling off (as well as being a garish bright red). How would I go about repainting the wall? I am assuming the first step is to remove all the peeling paint and start over? In some areas, gaps and cracks have developed in some bricks. Thanks.

Just to add, if there's any cracks or deep holes use a good exterior filler such as toupret. Screwfix sell it.

Hi Richard, it really depends on the paint that's used. If it's just emulsion then you could try a powerful pressure washer to remove it but if it's gloss or oil based paint then you'd have to just scrape the loose and flaky paint off before repainting. They may have painted over algae or dampness so this needs to be treated with a fungicidal wash then rinsed and allow to dry thoroughly before painting with a good quality masonry paint.
