Hi John, You can have the top cupboards right at the edge of the hob on each side as long as you have a cooker hood fitted above the hob which is usually as wide as the hob (600mm). Some of the cooker hoods are actually built in the cupboard above the hob. The only thing you should be aware of is that you shouldn't have any electrical point (like sockets or switches) within less than 300mm from the edge of the hob.
