Putting things on the wall

Posted by Liam Caffrey, on
I am planning to put up a sort of floating TV cabinet on my wall, so picture maybe a shelf with heavy things on it, standard UK walls, mainly plasterboard, would it be a better idea to attach it to the wooden beams behind the wall? And if so, how would I find them?

Dear David, Depending on the weight you are hanging on the wall, you can also use rawlplug plasterboard screws which are designed for holding heavy loads. They are easy to screw in even with a screwdriver if you do not have a drill. 2 screws can hold a lot of weight. On the packaging it will give you the maximum loads.

fix to timbers but your wall maybe what they call paramount which has no timbers in or it could be dot and dab where plasterboard is stuck to the wall with big lumps of adhesive so it could be brick behind that only way to find out is tap a long nail or something through the plasterboard to try it and fill the hole afterwards do it where it wont be seen then youlle know what your walls are

Hi. You can locate the wooden timbers by using a stud finder device. Sometimes it may be necessary to remove the plasterboard and build a stronger frame. Especially if you are using a cantilever bracket that will create more down force on the fixings.
