If I were doing the work for you, I would fix timber battens to the ceiling first (44x20mm) picking up the joists in the floor above. Depending on the type of light fitting, most are easily removed with the power switched off. The fitting of the plastic T&G can take place now, with the re-fitting of the lights as you go.
