How can I tell if a drain is a full drain or a soak away?

I have a drain at the back of the house with nothing running to it and I want to have the wastage pipe from the washing machine drain into it but I am unsure whether it is a full drain or a soak away. We cannot find the man hole cover for the main drain so we are not able to check here.
