Replacing existing light fittings with downlights.

Posted by Alan McKenzie, on
Fitting downlights in my hall ceiling. One downlight in place of each of the three lights already there. When I remove each existing light fitting from the ceiling, they each unplug from a junction box screwed to the ceiling. Going into each junction box, from the big grey cable in the ceiling are the live, neutral and earth wires. This is all fine, but the terminal block inside the connection box attached to my new down lights only have two terminals, live, and neutral. So what do I do with the earth wire from the ceiling? The new lights are double insulated and so I believe they may not need the earth connection? But if this is the case, again, what do I do with the wire? Thanks

Hi Alan, even though your new light fittings are double insulated you need to maintain the continuity of the earth wire (CPC - Circuit Protective Conductor) throughout the circuit. One way to achieve this is by using a junction box at each location where the new fittings are being installed to terminate the existing fixed wiring. From these junction boxes you can then run a short piece of sheathed flexible cable (preferably heat resisting) to supply the new fittings. The junction boxes can be pushed up into the ceiling void adjacent to the new light fittings. All terminations should be within a suitable enclosure and bare earth wire should be covered with green and yellow sleeving. Terminal strips covered with insulating tape are not considered a suitable enclosure. Please remember to ensure you isolate the circuit at your consumer unit before you start work. For safety you should prove the circuit is dead with a suitable voltage tester.
