I think we have had a dodgy electrician re wire our house and just wanted to ask a few questions... 1. In all 5 bedrooms the electrician has chased horizontally round the room from plug sock to plug socket. Is this standard practise / safe? 2. In 3 of the bedrooms the electrician has chased up the middle of the wall. This is not above a plug socket. Is this standard practise / safe? 3. 12 Volt fuses have been used for smoke alarm and burglar alarm. Is this standard practise / safe? 4. Bare wiring from the fuse box round to the light switch in the garage is exposed and tacked to the wall. Is this standard practise / safe? 5. All wires were left floating around i.e. not tacked to the walls or in casing. Is this standard practise / safe?

Hi Stacey, an electrician undertaking work of this scope should usually be registered on one of the Part P schemes run by organisations like NICEIC and NAPIT as this work is subject to building control regulations. Electricians on these schemes will provide an Electrical Installation Certificate on completion and you will have an insurance backed 6 year guarantee against poor workmanship. If the person or company who did this work is not on one of the Part P schemes and has not provided an installation certificate you have no guarantee that the installation has been installed and tested to an acceptable standard. Probably your best course of action is to get a second opinion from an onsite visit from an electrician qualified to test and inspect installations.
