Shower KW?

Posted by Jamie Watchorn, on
I have a 8.5 kw electric shower which has died and i'm wanting to replace it with a 10.5kw electric shower will this be ok with the fittings already installed ?

Hi Jamie You can only replace the shower with a 10.5kw version if your supply cable to the shower is 10mm T/E and you are runnIng it off a 40A mcb at the board. While I'm here I would seriously advise you if it's not already ensuring your fuse box/consumer unit has RCD protection. If your not sure please consult a qualified electrician for advice. You need to check the size of cable already in your shower circuit. If it is 10mm2 twin and earth it will be OK. Most shower circuits I see in houses are usually in 6mm2 which is not adequate for 10.5 kW and will overheat.

Check the cable size, if it is 6mm then you will need to upgrade to 10mm cable and check the fuse rating. You will need a 40amp rcbo protected supply. I trust this assists.

It depends on how thick the cable is the safest way is get a qualified electrician to have a look , if you have the standard 6 mm cable I suggest installing a 8-5 Mira sport they are very good showers and quite powerfull

Without looking at the equipment already in place it's hard to tell! But for the new shower the cable should be 10mm twin and earth protected wit a 45A mcb which in turn is protected/incorporatin an rcd
