Where do the extra wires go ?

Posted by charles Pinkney, on
I want to replace a standard plastic light switch with a new chrome one. ( just the top cover and switch). There six wires to connect and I'm not sure where they go. 2 red,1 yellow,1 green and yellow, 1 black and 1 blue (both with red sleeves).

Hi Charles It may sound a little daunting what Cony has said but its quite easy really. If your in any doubt call an electrician. They wont charge you a lot to simply change a switch for you

Hi Charles, You actually have to different cables in that switch. One of them is a three core cable and earth, the other one is a twin and earth cable. Connect the red wire from the three core to terminal "C" of the switch Connect the yellow one from the three core to terminal L1 Connect the blue one from the three core to terminal L2 Connect the red wire form the twin and earth cable to L1 together with the yellow one. Connect the black wire from the twin and earth cable to L2 together with the blue one. The green and yellow wires from both cables need to be connected to the screw of the actual metal plate of the switch. Before doing this, make sure you turn off the power for that particular circuit. If the circuit doesn't work properly you have to check the other switch to see which of the wires from the three core cable has been used as a common ("C"). In our case we used the red but other people use different colors. Make sure you work safe because you're doing this on your own risk, and come back alive to tell us how it went :) Have fun!
