Hi Anne, I can't tell if you're talking about an intruder alarm or a smoke alarm. If it's an intruder alarm, there might be a 12V battery that still powers up the external sounder. If it's a smoke alarm, there still might be another smoke detector in the loft which runs on a 9V battery. Hope this helps!
