Electrical safety certificates

Posted by Ravleen Sabharwal, on
Does an electrician have to be registsered to provide an electical safety certificate? Where an electrician claims to be registered where can I verify that information? One of your tradesman has fitted fuse box for me and claimed to have done the electrical safety certification for my buy to let property. It transpires that the unit he fitted did not meet standards and no certificate was ever recieved. We have an invoice and reciept from this tradesman.

Any Certificate you recieve should be provided by an electrician via an approved scheme. The NICEIC, Napit and Elecsa are the most common and you can check on their websites for registered electricians, however these are schemes a contractor can be part of to prove competatcy and standards and are not mandatory requirement. It is the homeowners resposibilty to check that an electrcian is competant to carry out the work. Having said that if the tradesmans work is not up to standards you can report them to trading standards and Health and safety executive.

There is no requirement for an electrician to be registered with niceic to perform or submit a valid certificate, there is a requirement in law that any notifiable works be reported to the relevant local building control authority and all works must be done by a competent and qualified electrician, there is an additional cost for this, the electrician is required in law to do this However its not a good process you as the client would want to get involved in, far better to just get an niceic electrician To check any electrician, before taking up their services ask for their niceic number then go online niceic.com and enter their nic number to check them out
