How to disable some of the LEDs on a LED strip..?

Posted by Paul Savage, on
I want to stick (probably try sticky backed with a some supporting staples) an LED (SMD 5050) tape to my kids bedroom ceiling, so that they have a star constellation there (colour changing - dimable - flashing etc). To do this I thought I would run a single piece of strip around the ceiling and disalbe the LEDs in the strip taht I don't want to light. Leaving only the ones in the star positions. Then I'll paint (white) over the tape to hide everything but the "stars" and use a painted (magnolia) narrow cable duct down to the psu. How do you disable the spare LEDs, I've seen soldering being used but can just a stanley knife cut the LED connectors/circuit tracks to disable say?

Soldering strips are the best ones, If your going to cut them down, make sure you cut it on the thin line that would be marked on the strip and there will be a little solder dot either side of the line. Don't just cut it anywhere as it could damage it. Hope this helps
