....my garage door sensor is wired or braided together with a white and red wire. ........is that safe??

That depends on the type of sensor. If it is for your alarm system then it only carries 12vdc although the cable should be protected and fixed securely so as to prevent damage if it's for a sensor for an AC power light then this may carry 240vac the wiring colours for an alarm system are usually left to the installer to decide and i have seen many variations of colours used on other sensors it may be manufacturers recommended colour code
