Live picture hook nail

Posted by Richard Carr, on
An electrician was investigating a lighting circuit fault. He said he suspected that a picture hook nail might have severed a cable in the wall. He said his meter indicated that the nail (1mm diameter) was live. But when the plaster was cleared from around the area of the hole that the nail had left it was obvious that the nail was nowhere near any wiring. What could have caused the meter to give a 'live' reading?
