Hi james the type of wood to go for is all dependent on what finish you want and what you want to spend engineered is very nice and will last yoy for years but generally is fitted as a floating floor over an underlay so can have some up and down movement in it so not the best if you have kids running around the alternative is solid but this can work out expensive as the subfloor may have to have work done on it to make it good enough to fix to and then the cost of the adhesive to glue it down can be expensive and most fitters charge more to glue down solid wood also if you decide to change it in a few years you will have a mighty job on your hands getting it up and then making the subfloor ready for a new floor . hope this helps .alan
