Hello Colette, as is consistent with all the other answers you have had, a solid wood floor needs to have been fitted correctly ie: have had time to acclimatise in house prior to fitting, that all wet trades have been finished and allowed to dry fully, that an expansion gap of at least 12mm was left around the perimeter and that the floor was fitted either secret nailed to timber sub floor or stuck down to a concrete sub floor with a self adhesive underlay, which both ways allow the floor to expand and contract naturally. What you must not do, is to clean the floor with a wet mop or allow spillages to be left to penetrate as this will cause the floor to expand and in your case lift up. If your floor has been secret nailed, the problem can be rectified quite easily, but not quite so easy if stuck down.

Hi Colette, Looks like you are missing expansion gaps, 10 to 12mm on yhe edges where floor meets wall or skirting board.

Hello Collette, thank you for your enquiry, it would be helpful to know a little more about your installation in order to answer your question fully. Firstly solid wood flooring should not be confused with an Engineered product (species top layer with ply carrier underneath) as these will perform differently. If your floor is solid species wood throughout is should be either glued to the sub-floor in the case of concrete or nailed for wood, solid wood should not be layed "floating" (glued together) All timber products will expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity and sufficient expansion gap should be allowed for around the perimeter of the installation and any fixed points, pillars, radiator pipes etc, this is normally the main cause of "bridging" or lifting of the floor, the other cause is moisture from either a damp sub-floor or a leaking underfloor service. My advice would be to contact the installer and ask them to return and survey the floor, they should then be able to determine the cause of the issue and advise you accordingly.

hi collette was the flooring timber or laminate? if timber was it fully dried? was the correct under flooring installed before commencement? there needs to be a gap of approx. 12mm around all edges to allow for expansion, was this done?

Brian Hay

Hi, What sort of flooring was it? What is the sub floor? What room is it? How was it stuck to the floor nail/glue? What was the moisture content of the wood before laying? How dry was subfloor? Skirtings on/off?

What would you like to do now?
