Under floor heating and solid wood floors.

Posted by Jon Olsen, on
I want to lift the floorboards in my Victorian flat and install under floor heating, and then put the floorboards back. I'm reading though that UFH isn't great for solid wood floors. Thoughts? Advice? Also, if I go ahead with this and lift the floorboards, is that a better time to have them tidied up (smooth rough edges, sand back existing varnish - either on or off site) than when they are back on the floor? Thanks.

Under no circumstances should under floor heating be installed if you have a solid wood floor. The only exception is if you have engineered or Laminate. regards Jeff ( Guild Flooring)

Found this.... "Under floor heating is suitable for many types of timber flooring, but most installers stipulate that the timber be specifically recommended for UFH use. The flooring should have a top temperature restriction (usually 27°C) and an expansion gap needs to be left around the edges (this is easily hidden by a skirting board or trim). Always liaise with the flooring supplier and heating installer before making your purchase. Many suppliers will recommend a specific brand of electric UFH and it's a good idea to listen to their advice.
