Do I need underlayment?

Posted by Kim Meerdink, on
I am removing old 3/4 inch flooring in a room. I was going to put down 3/4 inch Sturd-i-floor tongue and groove plywood, then luxury vinyl tile will be even in height with the adjacent room. Should I put underlayment on the plywood before the tile? The plywood is designed to be smooth. If I use underlayment then I would use 1/2 inch plywood instead of the 3/4 inch stuff.

The underlay is purely up to you. If you take up the old wooden floor your best move would to put insulation in the joist voids. This would increase insulation to the new floor and allow you to have a level end result. Jim
