How do or what do I do to ensure that grade A turf is supplied by the tradesman selected to do a job for me? A way of checking Iam getting what I pay for?

Yes, that's pretty good advice. Go direct to a big company that deal in volume- I'd also look for any company that give you options or grades of turf. If you have children playing regularly on the lawn - or large dogs you may want a hard wearing mix rather than the top grade. All turf contains a mix of grasses which look identical to the untrained eye. The finer, greener more carpet like turf will contain a high % of bents and fescues. A coarser but tougher mix will have a lot of rye grass and should be cheaper, this is sometimes called 'meadow turf'
