Can the roots of a privet hedge cause any damage to a brick wall in the front of a house? When is best to plant the hedge in Nov/Dec or Feb/Mar?

Hello Gabriel, In my experience it's uncommon - but it does happen occasionally. Usually long after the 'hedge' is still a hedge and has become (due to lack of regular pruning) a small tree. Privets, like Box plants can, over many years, reach 20ft and form large clump like roots which are difficult to dig out. In fact I've known a few cases where it was easier to knock down a small wall and start again. If you keep your hedge regularly clipped to 6 or 7 ft there should be no problems however

Hello Gabriel, Pete is right, it's uncommon for them to cause a problem if the hedge is maintained. With regard to planting, early autumn is the best time but they can be planted any time over the winter as bare root plants or any time of the year as pot grown or root balled. I hope this helps, Cheers Craig
