What's the procedure for laying patio slab tiles

david paterson

Hi, dig down 150/200 mm, put in type 1 base, compact it, put down granite sand , compact it, screed it then lay slabs, grout in spaces or use kiln dried sand

Hello David, The first stage is to prepare the sub base. This should be approx 100mm deep compacted type1 for a pedestrian path/patio. You then lay your slabs on a complete bed of mortar approx 40mm deep (DO NOT use the old fashioned blobs on four corners and one in the middle!). Once laid you need to point up the gaps in between. This is assuming you're using some sort of decorative slab. If you choose 50mm thick concrete slabs you can lay on sand instead of mortar. If you want more details there's a great website called paving expert which is run by an ex landscaper, you'll find all types of advice on here (it was recommended to me by my college tutor a long long time ago!) Dear David, Dig out 150mm of top soil (and dispose of responsibly) compact 50mm of type 1 hardcore and lay slabs on wet sand cement mix.

Hi David, patio slabs should be laid on a firm compacted and level surface, normally with a sand and cement mortar mix, certain paviors require to be layed on a full bed others can be spotted down. If in doubt you can consult the supplier or manufacturer of your paving. Hope this helps Harvey.
