Growing a lawn from seeds in Autumm - London

Posted by Gabriel Padilla, on
I´m planning to grow a lawn from seeds and I´m looking to get this started in the next couple of weeks (preparing the garden Nov 23rd/24th and seeding on Nov 30th/Dec.1st). Is is already too late to do this? Should I wait until March/April? Would spring be too dry to get this done in London? I look forward to your comments. Thanks,
Oliver Allchurch

Hi, Now the weather has turned it is now too late to lay grass seed as it will not grow. You will now need to wait until the weather warms up and is generally above 10 celcius so the seed can germinate. Once germinated the ground will need to be moist but not water logged or your new grass shoots will die. Growing from seed is far less expensive than laying turf but does require a little more commitment. The new grass must not be cut until at least 3 inches high and then only the first 5mm should be taken off and then left for 2 weeks before cutting again and only then can you consider reducing the height. Everything depends on temperature, rainfall an sunshine. Grass needs time to establish and lay down a network of roots, for the non professional this can take a couple of years. Be patient with seed and don't to go too hard on it but at the same time don't let it get to long that it gets out of control
