Posted by suri hafesji, on
When is a good time to plant New Headging, and also which type would be best for the front garden, to create a wall, something which requires minimum maintenance but also looks nice

Hello Suraiya Some good answer here already . Common laurel is an option, grows quickly, cheap, tolerates hard pruning, grows in almost any soil, resistant to drought, , pests, disease. Only needs cut once a year. Also, looks nice. Mark Surrey Hills Landscaping

Hello Suraiya, As mentioned in the other responses, now is the time for bare root hedging which is also cheaper than pot grown plants. if you want a dense hedge go for a double staggered row, planting about 45cm apart. Remember to prune the lead shoots on the plants by at least half so as to encourage bushiness. If you want something quite formal Yew is good though this is not sold as bareroot plants, and is available in gold forms aswell as green. With Beech sometimes the green form is mixed with the copper coloured leaved type giving a two toned hedge. Is there a nursery you can visit and speak to the staff? Also regular cutting gives a dense hedge with no gaps or leggy growth. Regards, Phil

Suraiya, Anytime from now til April. If you get a supply make sure that the roots don't freeze before you have a chance to plant them . I've just taken delivery of some bare root privet for a customer which I will keep watered (not too hard at the moment ) until I have a chance to plant them next week. Derek Austin livedog gardening

Hello. Now is a goid time to plant hedging plants as the plants themselves are dormant and therefore it's the best time......so long as the ground is not frozen of course. many thanks Dwayne Busbys Landscapes
