What does the soil need once long term paving stones have been lifted?

Hi Judy Will depend on the soil type and what you intend to do with the area? If your looking to plant or turf the area then aeration of the soil would be recommended by turning it over with a fork or Rotavator. If your planting also consider adding some organic fertiliser such as horse manure .

Hello Judy, I suspect that the soil has been compacted, which will need breaking up to improve aeration and drainage. The soil may just be subsoil, the top soil taken away when the paving was laid. Organic matter needs to be incorporated to bring life back into the soil. Well rotted manure, or recycled green matter from the council. Regards, Phil
