Acorns

Posted by Tracy Organ, on
We have 3 oak tress both in and surrounding our garden and this being the first year in our house, we are inundated with acorns. Yesterday I spent some more time clearing the leaves and discovered that masses of acorns have grown shoots and are burrowing into the ground. Can anyone advise me on how to deal with this problem please as we do want trees to establish.

Hello Tracy, If the seedlings are still small as in they have only their seed leaves showing (two leaves that do not look like oak leaves) then they can be hoed out. If bigger showing true oak leaves, you can still hoe or stick a spade through them, but you might get some regrowth. You can also strim the tops off if practical. The other option would be some weedkiller that is translocated through the plant. In the long term regular hoeing to keep on top of them, squirrels and birds bury the acorns. Hope this helps, Phil
