Fruit trees

Posted by linda oatley, on
Why do my fruit trees have black spots on the leaves and on the skin of the apples but the flesh itself is lovely. It doesn't look very nice.

Hello Linda, Going on the information supplied it could be one of several causes. 1) Apple Scab-fungal disease, you do not say whether the spots on the leaves develop into blisters and deformed leaves and on the fruit if they become corky patches. 2) Sooty Blotch-fungal disease, mainly on the fruit can be wiped off but may leave a blemish. 3) Fly Speck-fungal disease mainly on fruit All dependant on wet weather conditions. Prune to develop open centres to allow air circulation, thin overcrowded fruit and shoots. Clear up fallen leaves to prevent reinfection. Go to garden centre to see which spray are available, but if trees are large this may not be practicable. 4) Sooty Mould caused by insects basically crapping a sugary solution onto the upper surface of leaves and fruit which then encourages a fungus mould to develop. Can be wiped off fruit. Can apply sprays or encourage beneficial insects-lady birds/lacewings, or just tolerate it. Hope this helps. Phil
