Hi Sue The best time to prune is now while the tree is dormant, pruning back crossing shoots to encourage a good framework of branches to form. If you do need to thin out then follow long branches back to a side branch and prune at this point. Employ a landscaper / gardener with good references that knows what they are talking about.
